A Little Prince Birthday

A Little Prince Birthday

It’s been quite a year, and I felt like going all out for our J. We might’ve gone overboard on balloons, but is there such a thing? I picked “The Little Prince” as a theme because I felt like it was the best fit for our old soul Jackson, and his sister has been calling him her little prince since he came home. It made perfect sense. I’ve linked all the party goods at the end of the post!

I bought a used paperback of The Little Prince to use in decor. I made pennants using pages from my favorite illustrations, and it took the party from a space theme to full-on whimsical prince mode.

The gorgeous cake and cupcakes were made by September Moon Cakery. Her frosting is out of this world, pun intended. She always manages to match my theme with very minimal direction from me. I love putting parties together, but dessert is my blind spot. That’s where Cara comes in with her magic, and she is MAGIC.

I love party favors, especially when they’re scattered on the table for little hands to find. I chose mini pinatas full of candy, star tattoos, and splurged on Oeuf crowns for the kids since we were having a small family party. I love that every time we see these crowns, I will remember this day. There’s a time for disposable party goods, but I love a good takeaway heirloom favor, especially for a day this special.

The balloon garland was a lot easier than I anticipated, but a tiny bit of a learning curve at first. I recommend adding 5” balloons to a typical balloon garland kit, getting the motorized pump to blow them up, and ditching the balloon tape for the bunching/tying method on YouTube. I used this tutorial and it was much more my speed! The bird balloons were by far the most annoying to string up. They brought major Little Prince vibes to the overall set up, though!

I loved the challenge of this theme. Designing a party around a book isn’t the easiest, and I wanted something with major planetary feel, instead of the more pastel parties I saw on Pinterest. I recommend following a color scheme closely, incorporate unique elements (wooden toys, knitted crowns, handmade backdrops, and illustrations from the book), and pulling ideas from other themes (“outer space parties” was a big search for me on Pinterest!)

The backdrop was so cheap and easy to do! I bought a 6x9’ canvas drop cloth and painted layers of blue and navy paint until it looked how I wanted. B and I splattered white paint (outside is best!) until it looked like a galaxy. I wanted the edges to be rough with a natural canvas border. A faster way would be dying the entire drop cloth with navy fabric dye (washing machine method would be ideal for this size) and then the splattering white paint. I hung it with a tripod set from Amazon (linked at the end of the post) and covered the top clips with a homemade balloon garland.

We loved celebrating this sweet guy. He enjoyed a tasty birthday sucker and was spoiled by our family. We even got a sweet family photo out of it!

Happy Birthday Jackson. You are so loved. “The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
